Efforts towards Self-Realization | In Quest of Truth – Q&A with Shri Babaji. No.182
Host: Thank you Babaji for today’s meditation and Q&A session. The topic today is relating to Self-Realization.
Questioner: The first question. Babaji, it is said that we are now living in Kali Yuga, where human virtues are said to be at the worst and these are most challenging times. Is this why not many people are attracted or motivated to meditate and focus efforts towards Self-Realization? Could Babaji please comment on this?
Shri Babaji: One is, since time immemorial, very, very long time, people have not bothered to attend to their mind. You see, in this world, to understand about the need of physical health itself, if anything affects even a single finger of our physical body, then we understand the value of that. That part of the body; how God has given us, how necessary it is, then how it can make us disabled or a handicapped feeling, something like that. So, body itself, it takes time for us to understand and take care of its health. Mind is totally neglected. Many youngsters think, “I am perfectly alright, I don’t need any meditation at all,” but they don’t understand this world is such a big challenge. When things don’t happen according to their wishes, and they go into a head-on collision, then they understand the pain and the panicking or the suffering, any such thing that happens. But if they can understand, if they can take care of their mind first, controlling the mind, keep the mind purified so that they can restrain themselves, so that thoughts and visions don’t bother them, because all thoughts and visions come there in the mind due to the mind’s imaginations.
So like this, life after life, life after life has passed by. Many times, the birth of a body and the death of the body has happened which the mind called consciousness has experienced as if it was born and it died and it was born and it is going to die. These type of things has been happening. And in this process, mind has been totally neglected and always tried to see easy approach. You see in this age, we want everything in a package like an instant coffee. You don’t mind giving some money. Many people have even asked me the question, can Self-Realization happen just like an instant coffee type? Instantly; we just want Self-Realization, it should be there. I said, it doesn’t come in such a package. Only a certificate can come, these worldly things, and that too, instantly, like fast food, nothing comes to you. If you don’t have money in your credit card, nobody will give you free, free of cost for any fast food. You need to have earned some money; for that you are ready to work whole day, sitting in front of computer, dealing with bosses, teams, arrogance, egos and suffering, pain, panicking, working in the projects and you have to work all these things, then you earn some money. With that hard and money when you have in the bank, then you can order for a fast food.
Here also, the sadhana, meditation is like earning some money when you have to work hard. From an young age if you had worked, if you had understood. Many youngsters I tell, if you work out from now itself, by the time you come to your parent’s age, you can very smoothly handle your mind. But now if you neglect, if you simply do the time-pass, you don’t want to do any real sadhana, even after coming to spiritual path also, you don’t want to seriously do spiritual sadhana, then in next 20 years, 10 to 20 years, you will come to middle age, and then you would have lost control. Sitting even for one hour would become so difficult and such a painful and scary thing, you would like to avoid meditating. “Oh, if today Babaji says we can just gossip a little bit and no need to meditate, how wonderful it will be.” That’s how the thinking will come for many people. They keep asking also, can we avoid doing meditation?
So, like that people think, they want it easy. But nothing comes easy, no knowledge, no wisdom and money, all this thing doesn’t come easy. Some people might think people are becoming rich by easy ways. They might be shrewd and cheating and wrong paths, but they will never be happy or at peace. All the time they will have tension. That if somebody comes to know about their money, what will happen; if the government knows about their money, it will catch hold of them. So, that tension will always be there. They have to be pleasing politicians, all these things keep happening. So, they cannot be happy at all. They don’t understand.
So, all these things combined. We have got attracted to this world, through science and technology we have tremendously advanced, but we have forgotten spirituality. You see, all advancement in science and technologies, weapons systems, anything that we have discovered or invented, they all have created conflicts amongst human beings. Cutthroat competition, there is no healthy competition. One wants to cut other’s throat and then you want to develop. You want to pickpocket the other, you want to then develop. You want to buy a car, for that you want to do some pickpocketing and some robbing, something like that. So, these things have been learned just to make things easy, but things never come easily. People don’t understand. It is their mind that they need to control, they need to practice every day.
No magician, no power on this earth – any God men who would have claimed, “I will give you all these things, you are already Self-Realized,” they are just cheating you and exploiting your property, that is all. Such big gurus are all there. They will simply entertain by giving like what is called anecdotes and chutkules (jokes) and quotes and whatnot, entertain, then 50,000 people come. They will not ask you to sit for one hour of meditation. They are not bothered about your welfare. They are bothered about their own welfare. They want you to remain as a client type of devotee to them, clinging on to their feet all the time. And just they will please you also flatter you. “Oh, you are already realized, you don’t have to do anything. The realization is there. Who told you that you are not realized?” And the devotee becomes so happy, “Oh, my guru has told that I am already realized and I don’t have to do.” But they experience unhappiness, tension, fear. Then what’s the meaning of realization? That’s what when people ask, one person came, one lady came and told that, “My guru told that I am already realized, do you think that I have to do meditation?” “You see, you have a mind. Do you have peace in your mind? Do you have the awareness of that real Self? That mind is not preoccupied with its own imaginations and cravings about this world and is panicking, fearful, all these things are not happening; do you have peace? If you don’t have, go for that, achieve it to yourself.” This is what our ancient Gurus, our Sages, the great Maharishis all taught.
This is what people need to understand. They get attracted to the world; easy things. They want happiness. They become drug addicts, they drink alcohols. They think they are getting happy and they have become addicts. They spoil the brain’s health, they don’t understand the process of how it happens. When you take a drug or alcohol, your brain’s waves are suppressed. Its reflections are suppressed. So the brain is unable to remain activated. So when there is nothing to catch, the mind gets detached temporarily. When it is unconscious of the world and surroundings, then it enjoys some blissful state for a while. But the moment that medicine’s quality goes off the brain, then the brain jumps back ferociously, voraciously, and giving such unhappiness, such craving. So, one is unable to live or die. They get addicted. Many times we get to see on social media photos of youngsters, young girls becoming drug addicts and they are on footpaths. They are from well to do families and they are lying down on footpaths, unconscious. They have taken drugs. They don’t know what to do in the world what else. And they don’t want to do any spiritual thing. They don’t understand what is the meaning or spirituality, what it can give. It can give you the peace and happiness. It can help you to keep your mind quiet.
That formula everybody needs to understand. If your mind becomes quiet, you have peace in the mind. If the mind is peaceful, you have peace. If you have peace, you enjoy, all the time you can enjoy. Come what may be in this world, anything. Then you will be happy. You don’t have to cry and you don’t have to get panicked. You don’t have to become nervous at all. “It’s okay, no problem” – that attitude will come to you. So that is why people of this world have forgotten. They don’t get attracted. So they get attracted to all the bad things of the West. We easily adopt such things. And we don’t adopt their good things. Anything that they give us to as we forget our own culture, our characters, our spiritualities. And then we become attracted and become victims and addicts and slaves to such habits which are harmful to physical health, mental health. Unfortunately, this is what is happening. That’s why we try to talk to people about these things. We need to discuss. People need to understand how important to control their mind. That’s what Swamiji said always. Controlling the mind is important.
Many Westerners misunderstand controlling means the Guru controls their mind, that is not the truth. [They need] the mind under their control. Just like you are driving a vehicle, you need to have the vehicle under your control. Otherwise, an accident can happen. The same way in this world also, if you are unable to keep your mind under control, you will go into a head-on collision with this world and you will be miserable always. Unhappiness, craving, these things keep happening. Then you want a quick solution. “Is there anybody who can give me peace? Five hundred dollars I can give.” But peace is not available in any shop. So many things you can buy in the malls. You can go to mall. You can take a credit card. And you can have your mobile phone. Anything you can have. And instantly, you can order something and make a payment.
At that time, you are so happy. “Oh, look at my instant card. I can quickly make payment like anything.” But the money needs to be there in your bank account. Without that, what is the use of having just a credit card? You have it but it doesn’t work at all, so then what is the use? But for that money, you need to work. From right morning to evening. The evening when you come, you might be feeling sleepy and tired and want to go to bed as quickly as possible. So that will be the thing. But you had to work the whole day, you had to work. Then only you will be paid some salary by the company where you are working. Otherwise, who will pay the salary? Ask any company, “I want to keep sleeping the whole day. Can you pay some salary please just for sleeping?” Your parents might give you some pocket money if you are just sleeping and working on mobile phone, playing games. But the company will not give, you have to work. In the same way, the world will not give you happiness if you don’t work for that. All the cravings all the time is there.
So this is what one needs to understand and understand that we need to work it out. For physical health, when there is ill health, we take out time and we go to a doctor. We cannot say, “Doctor, I don’t have time, I cannot come today. I will come after 10 months later. Let me see, still if the illness is there.” By then you would have died. So you wouldn’t be able to go to a doctor – you need to set a priority and go to the doctor. So every human being when you don’t have peace, you are ill, mentally ill actually. Your habits are all wrong. You have gone into a craving unnecessarily. You are stressful. You have fear. You have panic because you are scared of this world; you want an easy way. Practice meditation. It takes some time. A little bit of effort. Once you become used to, then it becomes easy. You see, in this Malaysian group, the beginning we were doing only 40 minutes, then 45, 50 minutes. Now all are able to sit for one hour. At least 25, 30 were sitting in the Ipoh group, Ipoh center. So many people are there, you see? Some of the regular meditators who come with me, they are all in this group here also. They try to participate in every Zoom class of mine and comfortably sit for one hour. That is the practice, practice, practice. Every day you practice, then that becomes very smooth. You get used to it.
So these things are necessary to understand. It is not the age, it is our own weakness. As the time passed by, we have become very weak because we have discovered natural resources in the form of machineries, intelligences – now the artificial intelligence has come. Slowly, we are going to lose human values and human relationships. And people are making… we get to see the news, a girl makes a boyfriend with a machinery, chat-bot. She keeps talking; she just wants the time-pass. That is all. She knows very well that doesn’t have a body at all. She cannot marry that one. But that machinery is her boyfriend. This is the effect of artificial intelligence. So they are going, people are going to become addicted and they will spend the time gossiping with them. Again, the same thing will happen. We won’t work for our happiness, for peace, for earning, but we would like to gossip.
Initially, it would look so nice. “Oh, some machinery, some robot is talking to me so friendly. How sweet, it talks all such nicer things. It gives me a nickname also.” But how long can it go, do we realize? In the society we don’t realize; youngsters already with the computer and mobile phones. So many youngsters have had been wasting their time in gossips, SMS. Even if they are sitting in front of all gurus like us or elders, they are busy working out their own SMS. Some satsang, some bhajans are going, but some people are very busy working on their SMS. They want to chat with their friends. That is more important than even God. Then how can they ask for God when they are not interested? They should feel interested. They need to have. They should stop. They must become serious. When they are sitting in a Zoom class in a question and answer or in a satsang, in a bhajan, any such thing with a guru, they should be serious to listen what the guru is saying. If somebody is busy with their mobile phone and SMS, they cannot give up that also, they need to gossip; that is the priority for them.
So this is what has happened. It is not the age. It is the same sun, same earth going around the sun, same morning, same night. Simply the calendars, year changes, yuga changes, era changes. 50 years ago, 100 years ago a villain used to have only a knife. Now the villain has the bombs fitted to his or her own body, in a movie also. Mean thinking has deteriorated. We have gone back. On social medias also, our thinking, the news things, everything is totally deteriorated. So, this is what is happening. We need to get properly educated about our own culture, our spiritual values, why these were taught. Not simply the grandfather’s imagined stories. It is needed for everyday happiness and peace. For that you have to work out. Every time I tell; once in a week or a fortnightly we come on a Thursday. After this Zoom class, do you meditate every day like this for one hour? Then you would become an expert. How smoothly it will go. You see, you need food every day. You cannot afford to think “Only once in a week. I will eat it. That is enough for me. Or once a month. Every day, who is going to earn for this food? It is a headache. I am not going to eat” – that doesn’t happen. You have to go out of way. You must earn your livelihood. You need it. If necessary, you are ready to become a labourer also because you need some food to sustain yourself.
That we need to understand; we all need happiness. Happiness is your existence right I have always told. But you have to earn. You have to work it out. Never believe if anybody says, “I will give you happiness,” that’s what Swamiji taught us. If anybody says, “I will do it for you,” 50,000 people might come, but they are getting cheated. You will have to do one hour meditation. Swamiji insisted. But even in Swamiji’s time also, people did not listen. They were all happy sitting around Swamiji and gossiping. Every evening, many times we used to see, people used to stand around His dais and gossiping. All politics, this, that talking, [inaudible] they used to stand around him. But the moment Swamiji asked, “You all sit for one hour meditation,” suddenly everybody disappeared. Only one, two, four, five. That’s hard to meditate. So nobody meditated. So they are all miserable. They are unhappy. But they want easy methods now.
So, these are some of the points that is coming to me to understand why this has happened. Simply, we have become lazy and weak. We want easy, easy things. If our parents can give us food, we are happy to sit in the room playing with mobile phones. We don’t want to work at all. We must start thinking that we need to work and look after our parents. Youngsters must think that one. So, this is important.
Same Questioner: Thank you, Babaji. You have shared so much in just one question. It is very enlightening for all of us. Babaji has also said somewhere in the beginning that just how we realize the importance of taking care of our health when we fall sick, then only we start focusing on the health of the body and doing whatever is necessary. So, similarly, sometimes, I think many of us, we came to Babaji or we came towards meditation when we went through certain difficulties in our lives, certain challenges and we were searching for solutions. So, in a way, can we say that these events have been sent to us by God so that pushing us towards doing something better, going towards God, that the suffering is actually not a negative thing, but it is a push towards going to God?
Shri Babaji: Yeah, when you are pushed to suffering, you want to come out of that suffering, then you work it out. Otherwise, it can be so painful. Until that pain doesn’t come, you will remain lazy, you will keep postponing, you will remain casual, “We can do tomorrow, we can see another day.” That’s why God has given all these sufferings, agony, which can throw you back to divinity, He will not allow you to sit peacefully in this world. Even when God comes to this world, God, or yogis like us are also not allowed to sit peacefully in this world. Seventy years, you see? Now, just like parents, I should have had disciples ready to take over from me and do the mission work. But nobody is ready to do it yet. I have to be working now. I keep myself busy, morning I have to do office work, and evenings I have to sit and meet people. Then weekly, thrice I have to do this Zoom class, answer the questions. We try to do small, small videos also to put on the YouTube which can be useful for people, which can attract people; something we try to work out, so that my life is useful. So, I don’t feel that I am 70. I feel just like I came 50 years ago, like 20 years old. We keep working and I’m enthusiastic and I’m so happy. That’s what it is.
Do you remember? Just for sake of everybody also, first time I came for the Malaysian retreat in 2004, December I came. At that time, people were not sitting for meditation. Other things were all there. Pooja was there, bhajan singing was there. And everybody were eating merrily. Then I starting making them to sit for meditation. One hour meditation, morning. Then I saw everybody sleeping. Then I heard and discovered everybody were eating noodles, eat it up and then come for meditation. Then I had to ask them not to eat anything in the morning. You must come empty stomach, sit down slowly, slowly. Then slowly we introduced discussions about the question and answers, about my teachings. So, I discussed with Brother Hari how to do it and he organized very well. Brother Hari organized, I must be thankful to Brother Hari and his family. They all helped me so much. And they worked out, they brought out books and question answers, they framed and they encouraged you all to do this session. So, now, Malaysians are able to sit for one hour meditation, they are getting attracted. Wherever they come, I make them sit for meditation. When I come for retreats also, every time I make them sit for two times, three times, one-one hour meditation. Then I make them discuss about my teachings, etc. No time-passing happening. So, these things, so much has changed, you see? Working out, working out, now, it is smooth.
Like that, everybody coming to zoom class. Even after this zoom class also, if only you all can think seriously, to sit every day in the same way, think that Babaji is sitting in front of you, live. Every day Babaji is sitting with you, live – at that time, sit for one hour meditation. Imagine Babaji is sitting with you, live. And sit. Then see how much changes will come in you, how much you can achieve that peace, that enchanting peace within when it comes. Then you understand the taste Swamji used to talk. It is very ‘ruchi’, He used to talk of this word. When you come to that level; perhaps He wanted to tell of the blissfulness, the peace and the tastefulness, then you would not like to give up meditating at all. You want to sit again. Every day you want to sit again. So that is the thing that you will get attracted to once you taste it.
People don’t want to taste it. That is important. You need to peel out the skin; inside the fruit is there. You need to have some patience just to peel out the skin, not to harm the fruit. Then the fruit is ripe and you eat that fruit. Then you will understand how important it was to peel out the skin. Without peeling out the skin, “How to eat this fruit, how to eat this fruit, this is nonsense. This is not easy. I want something easy I can eat. Somebody can peel out.” No. This is such a fruit only. You have to peel out the skin. You have to meditate. That meditation is the peeling out the skin of the fruit. Then you have the fruit in your mind. Who else can do anything for your mind? It is your weakness, your strength. You are happy, you are unhappy. Every teacher, Buddha, every master, spiritual master told the same thing; constant cravings of the mind is the basic reason for unhappiness. Swamiji said, every day you have to practice and know yourself. You do everything for yourself. But if you don’t know who you are, you will end up doing wrong for a wrong thing, which is not you. First find out who you are. Know yourself, meditate. It will automatically be revealed as to who you are, how you exist as that; supremely peaceful, enjoyable.
Same Questioner: Babaji has said one should have a ‘do or die’ attitude when it comes to efforts towards Self-Realization. Babaji, as we are living in the physical body which is always exposed to risk of disease, pain, physical suffering and given that aging is inevitable, how does one motivate oneself despite experiencing the discomfort of bodily suffering?
Shri Babaji: See, first thing, that is why always great teachers and even Swamiji also used to tell, if from a young age, if one can be taught the Bhakti Marga, when the mind is innocent, it is not yet exposed to the harms of the outside world, corruption of the outside world, then such people can develop faith in such a wonderful way and they will pick up quickly. This is important. This is one thing. Another thing, when health is alright, we need to sit down and practice. We keep postponing. “Maa kuru dhana jana yauvana garvam.” When we are young, we are arrogant. “Ah, I don’t need anything. I can deal with any situation.” But when the age comes, you are 20, boy. Now you are 70. 50 years ago, you were 20. Now the body doesn’t listen to you. It is painful here. It is painful there. So then you are unable to sit. That is what happens. You need to practice when you are young.
Purandara Dasa also tells, when you are alright physically, now itself do the Ramadhyana, because when the end comes, when you are suffering with cough, all these problems, when you are in a coma, how can you remember that Neela Varnaya, that divinity, that God all pervaded in the space? So, this is one important thing. However, if already an illness has come and you have become old, still, you need to lose hope. There is always hope. You start somewhere. Something is better than nothing. It is never late to start, whatever possible. That’s why Swamiji freely allowed – in the beginning, you all remember? That’s what Swamiji taught me. “Sitting in any comfortable posture.” He never prescribed any posture that you have to sit in lotus posture, you have to sit in the veerasana, in this asana, nothing. Any comfortable posture for you, sitting on a chair on the ground, onto the wall. You want to keep the legs open and straight, anything. Just try to keep the back and neck straight.
And then keep the mind strong. Mind is strong. It never ages. Our body might become 70 years old, but the mind is not 70 years old. It is eternal. It is never born. So that’s why it never becomes old. It is always the same. Just try to close your eyes. Simply relax and have patience. Try to feel yourself. You are there. You are there. Don’t pay attention to any other thought, any other visions, any other things of the world. If anything needs to be attended, you can attend after meditation, postpone it. “I need to meditate. I can attend other hours afterwards, not right now. Nothing. Nothing is there. I don’t have anything.” Relax. Take a long inhale of breath and exhale the things. Then peace descends. Restlessness of the mind can be brought down. Like that you practice. Still it is possible. Bhagavad Gita… it is very true, Swamiji also assured, if death happens to you, where will you go? You will come back to me. Don’t worry. Just like that, He used to remove from the mind. “If somebody comes to kill you…” 50 years ago, He told, “…where will you go? You will come back to me.” He told, just like casually He was talking to me. He told, “Don’t worry if anybody comes and kills you, you will come back to me. Where will you go? You will have to be with me,” He told. So that’s it. Mine became so clear and peaceful. We cherish such moments and never had any doubt about anything. Swamiji removed it, just like that.
So that thing, that’s what Bhagavad Gita says, if the body dies for any reason due to old age or illness, you will be able to continue in the next life. From an early childhood itself, you will have inclination towards spirituality, spiritual truths. You will get attracted to the divine form, divinity, all these truths. Automatically, you will get attracted and you will find that your guru is there for you. The guru will come to you and you will be drawn to the guru. The guru will guide you from a young age. So, never lose heart, never lose hope if you are old also. Keep doing till the last breath of life.
So, you have opportunity and time till the last breath of life. I repeat, you have opportunity till the last breath of life! You have time till the last breath of life! Don’t tell you don’t have time. You have time! You are breathing, that means you have time! Utilize that breathing to remember God. Instead of remembering here and there and this personality, that personality; we don’t need. This world is not worthy of remembering – remember God! So, that’s what is necessary. Like Avvaiyar is a great saint of India, southern part of India, Tamil Nadu. She tells, even after being blessed to be born in Bharatavarsha, and even after being born in the Sanatana Dharma, and when you have your body intact, your eyes, your mouth, your nose, your legs, hands, everything intact, in spite of that, if you cannot take the Divine’s name, what to tell about your durbhagya, your misfortune, what to tell you about this. Take the name of God. Till the last breath of life. Don’t tell there is no time. There is time! You are breathing and you take God’s name.
New Questioner: Pranam Babaji. Babaji, during the whole day we get preoccupied with the events of the life, and then when we sit for the meditation, we notice that our mind gets sucked. It gets sucked into a thought. Or as if a thought has hijacked the mind. We are sitting, but the pull is so much that even if we make the eyeballs still, it’s just not coming. Even though we are doing the meditation, how can we get unstuck from that thought? It’s as if the thought has hijacked and I am helpless.
Shri Babaji: You see, now pay your attention. Important – nobody else has hijacked your mind or is going to hijack. It is simply your own habit. You have to set priority; importance. Just now you have set such an importance for all the events, 23 hours. Too much for the world. Just one hour also you are unable to set priority for meditation, for spiritual sadhana. That is the basic reason. So, once you start thinking positively. It must rise. The balance must be tilted, that in 23 hours during the events of your life, you must be thinking about meditation. More and more about meditation. Just like now during meditation, you keep thinking about the events of your life. So you told that events of your life – add this meditation also as an event in your life. This is also an important event. So when it becomes important for you, then you will pay attention there.
You see, as long as you will consider Baba as your guru and important for you in your life, you will be able to take out time just like that and come from one hour whenever you are called for a Zoom meeting. Otherwise you will tell, “Sorry Babaji, I have some event, I have to go. I cannot come for the Zoom.” Then it is yours. I will simply tell, “Okay, I understand, no problem, you go.” But you will be losing. So like that, you have to set which is more important for you. You have to understand. So in fact, just to tell you more clearly, to live in this world you need actually a few hours, eight hours maybe, you may need to earn a livelihood. That is the first priority, importance; to sustain your physical body you need food. And you may need a home or you need some comforts, a little bit that much that is necessary. More than that must not get carried away that you are always going after the world, going after the world. You get attracted to so many other things which are not important. So, set such important things which is a must and necessary, try to do only those things, and try to come back to meditation as soon as possible. You must become restless to come back to meditation. If a Zoom link is sent, you must be restless to come for that Zoom; that must happen. So when you are able to set that priority, automatically the balance will tilt it in your favor. Not in your mind’s favor.
Same Questioner: Thank you Babaji. Now you mentioned that when we are sitting for meditation, the mind, it is distracting and all that. So there is one more thing. Now when we are sitting for either chanting or meditation or something, sometimes the mind, it comes, but I am able to watch the mind. And then it wants to play funny. Like, it wants to disturb. Like, for example, I noticed that when I am chanting, I have to focus, and I don’t want to be disturbed, but my own mind wants to disturb. It wants to spoil the effort. And I am like, why is my own mind acting like that? So why is that happening?
Shri Babaji: Habitual. Habitual is one thing that makes a person behave in such a way.Say, suppose you have some illness; you go to the doctor, doctor prescribes some medicine, along with that the doctor prescribes, “You eat only such things, don’t eat these things.” Six months later you go again, the same illness is there.
