Shri Babaji recounts,
“As a child, I was influenced by Adi Shankara’s philosophical song ‘Bhaja Govindam’ in which, addressing the scholar who was trying to memorize a grammar word called ‘dukrinkaraney’, the great sage tells him, “Sing and remember the Divine, for when death occurs to your physical body in due course of time none of your worldly knowledge or anything of this world that you may possess can come to your rescue.” I could not forget these words of death and always was yearning to know the secret of death and the nature of ourselves as the soul.
Further in the song Adi Shankara tells how, out of ego, we let go precious moments of life by not trying to know the true nature of our existence and in the end regret the time we wasted. Death is inevitable to the body, and consciousness, as mind, gets involved into the dualities of this world with its ego of an individual imagined self which does not exist. Thus, it is essential to feel detached to this world and utilize the precious time available to know our real Self.”
From the album ‘Nirvana Pushpam’ which includes commentary by Babaji on the profound words of the music.
